Panic
is an extreme form of anxiety that results in exaggerated physical
reactions including increased heart rate, hyperventilation, sweating,
confusion, etc. Understandably, these physical reactions are very
frightening and we become preoccupied with worry about them, this
can trigger increased anxiety and further physical responses. Because
of the extreme nature of this condition, it is not unusual for someone
in the throws of a panic attack to believe that they are having
a heart attack.
Frequently, extreme states of anxiety and panic attacks go hand
in hand. Many people report that they fear public embarrassment
or humiliation - by fainting or losing control of their bodily functions.
The occurrence of panic attacks often leads to reluctance to go
out in public or unfamiliar places. The symptoms of Claustrophobia
and Agoraphobia can result if anxiety and panic are left untreated
over a long period of time. People with panic have often described
as being "afraid of the fear".
